In November, Nebraska voters faced two dueling initiatives related to abortion. An initiative seeking to protect abortion rights fell just short with support from nearly 49% of voters. A nationally unique rival intiaitive, which leaves the current 12-week ban in place, passed.
The ACLU of Nebraska issued this statement from Executive Director Mindy Rush Chipman:
“Hundreds of thousands of us voted to end a ban that has hurt patients and forced people to flee the state for care. We only fell short because of a flood of well-funded misinformation and a dueling initiative designed to confuse voters, a campaign that outright lied to voters by claiming it would get the government out of health care decisions. Despite the disappointing outcome, these results clearly show Nebraskans will not tolerate any further restrictions on our personal health care decisions. The abortion rights movement in Nebraska is as strong as it has ever been, and we will not stop working to build power and regain and protect our rights.”
