We're working to make law enforcement more accountable to all Nebraskans by following Department of Justice guidelines for complaint procedures, independent review boards, and other areas.
In 2016, the ACLU reviewed complaint procedures used by 31 law enforcement agencies. Accepting feedback from the public is critical for law enforcement agencies to be open and accountable to the communities they serve. Several agencies in Nebraska meet Department of Justice guidelines, but more work needs to be done to ensure all agencies are accountable.

As one of the state's largest law enforcement agencies and one with state-wide reach, the Nebraska State Patrol should be setting the standard for Nebraska agencies, not lagging behind.
