In 1988, a student in Nebraska was denied the opportunity to play sports.
Stephanie Saint, a student at St. Joseph's High School in Omaha, won a lawsuit against the Nebraska School Activities Association. The NSAA at the time said that girls shouldn't be allowed to wrestle because of "safety" concerns.
The lawsuit was filed by Donald Feidler, a friend to many ACLU issues in Nebraska.
Since Stephanie's victory, many girls have gone on to not only wrestle in Nebraska, but qualify for championship games.
Unfrotuantely, not all students in Nebraska have the opportunity to play sports. The NSAA is once again keeping young Nebraskans off the playing field by passing an incredibly restrictve policy effectively banning transgender students from playing. Sign our Equality Agenda petition to let the NSAA know that, like Stephanie Saint proved, all students should have the opportunity to play!
2016 is the 50th anniversary of the ACLU of Nebraska. We will feature several memories from our five decades of defending freedom in the Cornhusker state here. Do you have a favorite memory? Share it with us!
